Year 13 Physical Chem 'Boarding Card' Starters

(0)
There are not many ‘Boarding Card’ Starter activities for Post-16 pupils, so I decided to make one. Even 17/18 year olds need to be engaged. There are 8 physical chemistry boarding pass style questions. Topics include: Born Haber cycles, Order of reaction, Arrhenius equations, calculating rate by taking tangents & buffer calculations. I distribute the ‘Boarding Card’ As my year 13’s enter and then either collect or get pupils to self asses. Answers are included. You can insert your own questions. Some pupils may not know what a ‘Boarding Card’ is so you may need to explain that you would get at a Boarding Card at the airport prior to travel and they give details of travel such as destination, terminal seat etc, and that you would not be able to travel without a boarding card-IE they need to be able to complete the question to show they have understood a key concept of physical chemistry. As always all proceeds will be donated to charity.

Mr & Mrs Sodium Chloride Split! The Story (Electrolysis)

(0)
I wrote this story many years ago when I first started teaching for a very difficult mixed ability year 10 class. It is a very ‘cringey’ story explaining the electrolysis of molten NaCl. I have used this many times as a creative way to develop scientific literacy-Which my pupils secretly enjoy…and then they come up with even better and creative stories. Just what you need with difficult learners :-) As always all proceeds go to Great Ormond Street Hospital who have supported my family.
